"She looked at him fondly; that he had been sent to her, when there had been so many other, lesser men who might have been sent, was a source of constant gratitude. That we have the people we have in this life, rather than others, is miraculous, she thought: a miraculous gift." -Alexander McCall Smith, from The Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party. (For my new husband!)

This is one of my favorite essays. David Sedaris makes me laugh like no one else, and this one, though filled with profanity, makes me laugh the most of all.

The Great Pumpkin

The Boy says this is inherently wrong, but Godiva the Dog doesn't seem to mind.

Book fair

We went to the National Book Fair, which is on the Mall. This year, I wasn't as excited about the authors as I usually am (except the poets, and Garrison Keillor, who will be there tomorrow). In past years, Alexander McCall Smith and Alexandra Stoddard have been there, and others I was more interested in. But getting to go with the Boy makes anything special for me, and we had a nice brunch at Masa on 14 with his uncle. They had a bacon Bloody Mary there, which was pretty fantastic and potent. I was bummed that Edmund Morris wasn't a very interesting speaker because I was thinking of picking up his series on Theodore Roosevelt...

We're making apple and sage mac and cheese, from a magazine recipe....I'll let you know how it turns out. Here's some photos from the festival, which was a lot bigger than my photos can portray.

Starbucks and Godiva

First salted caramel mocha of the season...and Godiva the dog trying to shake paws with the Boy for a sweet potato treat.
